BEAUTY AND THE BIAS
AESTHETICS & BIASES IN AI-GENERATED IMAGES
Master's Thesis completed at the University of Oxford, June 2024
ABSTRACT:
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of art has significantly transformed creative processes, leading to the presence of AI-generated images. This pioneering intersection between technology and art opens up previously unexplored territories, prompting critical discussions about the aesthetic, ethical, and social implications of AI algorithms.
This thesis aims to explore the aesthetic dimensions of AI-generated images, with a particular emphasis on the biases and stereotypes that may emerge as a consequence of machine learning algorithms. Certain AI technologies learn and produce images based on extensive databases of pre-existing works. This research investigates how these learning processes can propagate or create specific aesthetic norms and potentially reinforce existing stereotypes.
The rationale behind this study is threefold. First, it aims to explore the aesthetic principles of AI-generated images and to determine to what extent these principles differ from those of traditional “human-generated” art. Second, it seeks to examine the potential biases in AI systems and to ascertain to what extent these technologies inadvertently replicate or highlight stereotypes. Third, it intends to gain insight into public perceptions and acceptance of AI-generated images in terms of authenticity, creativity, and artistic value.
The research objectives were pursued through a methodology involving surveys and interviews with artists and experts who have started using AI in their work. The results indicate that while AI-generated images introduce, in a very small scale, novel aesthetic qualities and have a growing acceptance among the public, also perpetuate certain biases inherent in their training data. These findings underscore the need for more inclusive AI technologies to shape the future of creative practices. This thesis aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on AI and art in a constructive manner, providing valuable insights for artists, programmers, and researchers. Furthermore, it aims to foster the development of more unbiased and inclusive AI technologies.
As the integration of AI into creative processes becomes increasingly prevalent, it is of paramount importance to consider the implications of these technologies. This research is aligned with this need, with the objective of shaping a more informed and ethical future of creativity.
